Matthew Morrocco…

…is a New York Foundation for the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts-winning and Columbia University MFA-trained photographer.

Working between large format, 4x5, and medium format Rolleiflex film cameras, as well as medium format high quality digital systems, and working almost exclusively at magic hour,  Morrocco’s work is imbued with the beautiful subtlety of a Sunday afternoon.  As Hannah Abel-Hirsch wrote of his work in The British Journal of Photography, “a sense of peace permeates the images: the warmth of the light and the gloriousness of the backdrops imbu[es] the subjects with a certain etherealness.”

Inspired more by the legacy of painting than photography, he maintains a keen understanding of the broader history of art. Taking cues from Monet, Velazquez, Ingres, and others, Morrocco’s strong use of color and light, hints at his understanding of gravitas within his work, elevating quotidian things to the level of fine art. W Magazine writes, “what might previously have been dismissed as “mirror selfies” can be made into fine art photography.”

His work has been featured in The New Yorker, Cultured, W, Paper, The British Journal of Photography, and Vogue. His work can be found in the collections of the RISD Museum and the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Andover, and hopefully, soon, in your home. He lives and works in Vermont.
